I'm here to to help aspiring rock & metal audio engineers make better sounding records. My name's Jordan Valeriote. I've been a recording engineer, mixer and producer for over 10 years and have worked with artists like Silverstein, Emery, Neck Deep, Counterparts, Intervals and more. I regularly post the best recording and mixing tips, tutorials and walkthroughs for heavy music on this channel.
While other "experts" online are trying to teach you useless rules and place limitations on your work - advice like "only boost 3db on an EQ" or "avoid using compression," I'm here to reveal the techniques that pro engineers actually use on real world records.
In addition to the free videos here, I also offer premium courses related to mixing, recording and editing. Access to my courses is limited to email subscribers only. To get on my email list, download my free mixing guide for EQ and compression at mixcheatsheet.com

8 MISTAKES Audio Engineers Make Every Day
It actually sounded better at a slower tempo. Mix 2 that was eliminated sounded the best, even thou it was the wrong sample rate.
One of my fav albums ever ❤️🔥
Music for the masses😢
Funny how that little synth line that’s to loud is amazing genius because it’s Zakk. If you sent that mix for review you know you would hear that it’s to loud and distracting. 😂
Horrible mix imo. It sounds as if they clipped everything in a bold move to create difference since the song is so common place, but it only generates a lifeless amateurish sound in the end. I'm not a fan, but prefer CLA there.
You saved my life. Yesterday I tryed to EQ Toms on my mix and it works parfectly. Really thank you 😍
this track is fucking beautifully sad
just asking, all the instruments from the start sounds pretty much compressed already. So if you put another compressor on top of it, there is not that much difference. But if you put it on raw signal, this is a completely another story then IMHO. Btw, the comparison between waves plugin and HW on snare, the snare on plugin is gated differently, so there is some obvious difference in your chain (like from the time 7:10 ) or is the gate after the compressor, so the waves plugin is changing the gain so dramatically, that the gate closes/opens that much differently? And something possitive for the end, you mix sounds pretty dense and modern. Nice snare sound, for me a bit overgated, but anyway, very very nice sound in total. And thank you for this video!! (listened on calibrated Kii3 monitors)
Nickelback: 'The mix on this album is great'...As soon as I heard that comment, I stopped the video and gave a thumbs down. It's a horrible mess.
if you pay me 25 ill make it sound even better than all these lame ahh
This changed the way I mixed music. Best video on compression I ever watched
Blink 182, the guitar sound is so loud (wall of sound technique, I guess) that they kill the drums in my opinion....
I guess this mix is interesting from a sonic perspective, but this is just not my thing mix and production-wise. It's so overly produced, edited, and corrected. It doesn't sound like a real band. It sounds like something AI could generate. For me, rock should be raw and real sounding, like a band playing in a room together. I really do not like the guitar sound. I agree with you about making a mix interesting, I've worked with so many bands that don't want to try anything, but this is just way overboard.
that`s basically a bad Deftones impression with bad autotuned vocals.
i mean these are the worst over-autotuned vocals i have heard in a very long time.
I have to disagree. 5K just adds clutter. It gets in the way of everything else. Do a small shelf boost at around 900 to 1k, with a little goose at 10k. Then we use dynamic eq (compression) at 5k. Set the threshold so you are just barely compressing under a normal strum. When they start thrashing, there will be a lot of compression at 5k. This will keep it clean. It also adds gobs of sustain, so you get a strong tonal definition. Then depending on the instrument, you may add some dynamic eq (compression) around 300 Hz to clean up the low end. The compression at 5k tends to warm up the instrument a lot, so you need to balance that with some compression in the low mid. No one will know why, but you have a very rich sounding acoustic, that can be delicate or add a solid rhythm, depending on how it is played. The compression does the work for you, so you don't have to track what the player is doing. Interestingly, piano and acoustic are known for competing for the same space in the mix. With this setup, they easily stand up to each other and you have no problem picking each instrument distinctly out of the mix.
So good man
I had produced more than 1000 songs for more than 15 years, I know one thing is very important and many experts producers will agree with me, and that thing is (Room acoustics). its more important than your plugins , your gears. Your room response is very important especially low frequencies and room modes. good room acoustic will help you to choose the right kick, snare, bass…etc. i don’t know why everyone on RUclips ignores room acoustic!
I have exactly the same feelings. There is a clear, although not huge, difference between plugin and hardware. However, the main difference between hardware ones is that Warm Audio is actually more saturated. If I had to choose one of them, I would choose Warm Audio because it made the biggest difference and in general I liked the analog saturation, and here it was the most audible. Anyway even if im more jazz fan i really like the song. What song and band is this?
I don't consider myself a professional singer, but... I try to defend myself when I sing, I use tuners, I particularly prefer waves tune mono, and once I get my voice in tune, I study my own voice to, at the same time, push myself to reach other vocal levels
To me, the vocals and guitar tone are REALLY reminiscent of Deftones - Diamond Eyes. Controversial opinion, but I think Chino did it better.
Fascinating to hear the differences. I'm surprised though that you call mix three "a little too bright overall" when mix 2 has a ton of unnatural hissing in vocals and hihat. Don't get me wrong: Mix 2 sounds delicious overall. But the top end stands out waaaay too much and the vocals sound very unnatural - the latter can be considered a choice, the former should be a no-no considering the bias of different devices, isn't it? Yours is much more balanced and warmer overall, like my ear pressure finally equalised :D Overall hearing these strong examples of what "not taking it far enough" vs. mixing courageously and knowing what CAN be done is awesome, thanks so much for this! Also hearing that it's just part of the job to automate the processing of uneven tracks gives me a bit of a new perspective...
ruclips.net/video/-ta7lwDxSLc/видео.htmlfeature=shared This song has the best and iconic snare and in general drum sound in my opinion... It's a hard rock classic ballad from Israel 🤟🏻🥁
I'm seeing your tutorials, really very effective. What do you think of a timely preventive equalization that removes the resonances? Do you happen to do it?
So what about just mixing on AirPods, or something that’s commonly used by people who just listen to music? Following that logic it would make sense no?
I absolutely relate to "borrowing" someone's chain or mixing approach, even on the exact same or a very similar source, and it just doesn't work for me.
I was really light handed with processing on vocals and it was really killing my mixes until I found one of your videos showing off like 3 or 4 compressors serially. Saved me from an existential crisis
Wow great tutorial. Really thank you, these evening I'll try it
Great Video!
Holy crap these boomers in the comments…. How dumb do you have to be to compare this mix to Audioslave. Let’s maybe stay in the same genre if we’re gonna compare
For me version 1 was most natural, IMO the best.
Where does "make up" fit into all of this???
I think the main thing I’d change about mix 2 is just giving the vocal more mids and warmth when there’s less going on. I think it sounds better being so top heavy when there’s more in the mix, but when there’s not it ends up sounding a bit thin, like a radio speaker, and it doesn’t feel very intentional. It definitely does sound very modern and professional though, like something I’d hear on a rock radio station at 7:36 pm after getting a cheeseburger from a family owned burger joint on the coast of California. The vocals in mix 2 just have this satisfying shimmer to them that I really like.
You are not egomaniac! I am happy I am hearing the same as you, yours and vers 2 the best, I indeed cant chose
The amount of people in the comments that couldn’t even produce a bagel with cream cheese acting like professional producers tryna talk down on the mix but not giving valid reasons is hilarious
We literally gave valid reasons, and some were said by multiple people. If you like this song, cool. Some of us just don't and thats fine. Just enjoy your music and bagel with cream cheese
😂
Hey sorry, beginner here, how does LCR mix actually work? For istance, He said that he hard pans thing like rythm guitars etc. I can imagine that if you got multiple ryhtm guitars you can pan them towards different directions but does this apply also if you only have one track? (One rythm guitar in this case). Should this mean that I've to double the same track and hard pan one to the left and the other to the right? Thanks and sorry for the amateur question 😅
Awesome video! I agree the lines are close. I still prefer to touch knobs whenever I can. Keeping my hands off the mouse makes a huge impact on the overall experience for me. Not to mention it holds real value (can be sold) and never needs to be "updated" when my OS doesn't like it anymore.
All ur tutorials songs sounds aggressive
i don’t like this particular albums mix but i think Zakk’s work with Coheed was excellent
Zakk is Jordan's fav mixer now. I guess we might be hearing some high cut kind of mix soon from Jordan. With CLA's influence, most of Jordan's mixes are super bright and who's to play "that is wrong/this is wrong" game? It's just personal preferences that got "recognized" by the audience. This is a bold mix, pretty scoop high end and we going to new era of sound maybe? Who knows, but one thing for sure, you just cant stay stagnant can you? Remember what happened (and still happening) with loudness war? Lot of us said we crush the dynamic and what not but it's here to stay! Times change. Tastes change. People change. It's just life. Get ready to adapt is a good reminder here. Happy mixing everybody 👍👍👍
Times change but the (loudness) war rages on 😢
"You can't really be afraid to just keep cranking that knob as much as you can."
I usually don't comment that much but I have to. I spent over a year mixing and doing all these mistakes (listening for muddy freqs...) anything that the "mixing youtubers" were saying I did, and boy well it did not work well. And there we are a year later, I found your channel, and listen it might sound like over reacting but I swear I became such a good mixer compare to what I used to be (of course very far from a pro but getting better each day). Anyways that's an obvious way of saying that this guy just KNOWS, he did all these mistakes. He is so right about everything, and of course, don't look just listen...
Don't judge the album by its first strack Sound output sounds from Spotify source..
First mix is good. But why don't you remix it if you know how.
Mids are quite scooped in the 1k to 3k region to my ears. Dynamics are crushed, no space. But the production is top notch.
Thank you man, you have no idea how much you've helped me
Wild how many people don’t like this in the comments. This mix does everything I wanna hear from Zakk. Pushing the boundaries of what the limiter will allow. It’s against the glass while still highlighting all of the production elements and the vocal sounds great. So many things conventionally “wrong”, but that’s kinda the point. Convention doesn’t do anything new.
We should all try something new. Using a snare sample as a kick, mastering to a positive LUFS value or combining Country Jazz with Grindcore, with 15 seconds of white noise in between as a contrast. That would be new and interesting shit
@@DerSilvano as long as the vocal rips, I’ll listen.
Since someone in the comments wanted the timestamps: 0:00 Intro 1:15 Mix 1 3:06 Mix 2 6:10 Mix 3 9:13: Mix 4 12:36: Mix 5 16:02 Ranking (2>3>1>5, 4 is Jordan) 25:47: Conclusion
Hurr Durr, most people like it, I have to go the other way so they know I'm edgy and cool. 2029: yeah, I always liked that album, it was great, not like this latest shit.
Great advertising for the Fiver guy
this band and mix is everything i hate about metal now days lol
